Luster
The pearl emits a strong light called luster. This effect is created when light reflects off the layers of fine calcium carbonate crystals that make up the pearl. This substance is called nacre. When selecting pearls, consider that the larger the pearl, the more nacreous, the more luster it emits. Comparing 5mm freshwater cultured pearls and 10mm cultured South Sea pearls, there is a clear difference in the quantity of nacre. The difference in gloss is as clearly visible as the difference in pearl size.
Shape
Gemppearl provides the highest quality and rarest pearl-shaped beads-round. Shapes that are not spherical or even asymmetric are considered low quality. The Japanese Akoya, Tahitian, and South Sea pearls used in jewelry are often the roundest pearls, while freshwater pearls can be oval or slightly deviated from the circle.
Surface flaws
Since pearls are grown by mollusks, the nacreous coating does not necessarily stick together smoothly. Flaws and bubbles may appear during the layering process. The pearl with the smoothest surface is the highest quality and most popular pearl. In order to provide a series of pearls with different prices, Gemppearl offers a series of pearls with different surface characteristics.
Size
The size of the pearl largely depends on the type of pearl. Freshwater pearls are about 3.0 to 7.0 mm in size, Akoya cultured pearls are about 6.0 to 8.5 mm, and South China Sea and Tahitian pearls can be up to 13 mm in size.
Nursing
Pearls can last for a long time if they are properly cared for. The best way to care for pearls is to wear them often, because the body’s natural oils can maintain the luster of pearls. However, it is necessary to keep pearls away from household chemicals, including perfumes, cosmetics and hair sprays. These commonly used products contain chemicals that can dim the luster of pearls. It is recommended that you wear the pearls at the last moment before getting ready to go out, and remove them first when you return home. Before putting your pearls back, wipe them with a soft cloth and store them away from other jewelry to avoid scratching their fragile surfaces.
